Important purchasing note: These smoothing discs are sold individually.

Hi-Tech Diamond diamond smoothing discs ensure rapid removal of scratches and high spots on cabochons. They also smooth large, flat areas in channel inlay work and are perfect for smoothing, refining and polishing a wide range of material such as glass, gemstones, synthetic material and even metal. These diamond smoothing discs come with our All-U-Need rock/mineral and Slant Cabber rock/mineral lap machines.

Using a proprietary technique, Hi-Tech Diamond diamond smoothing discs use a high concentration of premium diamond that is loaded onto each disc to provide an extremely aggressive grinding rate yet leaves an exceptionally smooth surface finish. Each disc is color-coded to easily determine what grit the disc is. These diamond smoothing discs are guaranteed to out-perform silicon carbide sanding discs and other diamond compound finishing systems. They do not crack or peel.

6"- and 8"-diameter diamond smoothing discs are available. All discs come with a 1/2" arbor hole and 3M pressure-sensitive adhesive backing that bonds to backing plates, flexible discs and polishing heads. Optional sponge pads may be inserted under these smoothing discs to create a soft touch for cabochon work.

Please note: You will need a backing plate to use these smoothing discs.

They work as exactly as they should...

After starting off DIY with a cheap sander/polisher and some import electroplated discs and a full grit set of smoothing discs, I purchased the Slant Cab. The discs they came with are very high quality and work very well. The included discs in the rock/mineral kit provide enough grit stages for softer rocks but I found with harder material (jaspers, agates) it was helpful to get additional, interstitial stages of both the electroplated discs and the smoothing discs. In the end, I added 80-grit and 260-grit steel plates, and 220 and 3000-grit smoothing discs and I am able to fully get a great shine. I do not think the additional stages are necessary for either softer materials or if the source stone already has a smooth cut side.

When installing the discs onto backing plates, what I found to very helpful in getting the disc centered (the closer to center the less vibration occurs) was to use a 1/2" dowel to help locate and center the holes of both the discs and backing plates.

I will most definitely purchase these again.

I think you’ve done quite well with the hurricane fan motor so far it hasn’t shorted out. I’m disappointed with the backing plates not having adhesive I would preferred if for the cost of those sanding discs you could give us diamond plated grit instead of flimsy, cardboard, sandpaper made. If you actually wanted to impress me, you could give me those diamond plates instead of a sanding paper grid I’m doing all right with it just figuring out the Dobbers like I said I’m satisfied with the engine. I’m satisfied with the design like I said it has not shorted out but I’ve already replaced the water tag with a 5 gallon sand and then a 5 gallon return And that’s about it you know I would just explain that you know you’re clearly ripping us off on the sanding discs and that’s fine. You’ve got a business to run, but for the future if you actually want to impress me, come out with the diamond plated grit all the way up to 3000 and then I’ll pay you $100 of a backing plate .

Hi John - We appreciate your detailed feedback. In regards to the diamond plated discs that we believe you are referencing, we have these available here on our website: https://hitechdiamond.com/collections/diamond-discs/products/electroplated-diamond-discs. They do go all the way up to 3,000# like you request. We offer electroplated diamond discs and smoothing discs in kits as well. It just depends on what materials you are polishing, as different materials are better suited for different types of discs. In regards to ripping our customers off, this is something that we would never do. Our costs for supplies, from vendors, shipping, and general labor has increased significantly. Inflation has been very hard on us small businesses, and our prices have to reflect these costs or we would have no business to run. Again, thank you for your feedback and if you have any further comments or concerns, please feel free to reach out to our customer service team at at (630) 596-9909 or email us at sales@hitechdiamond.com.

Too Dang Expensive for What They Are

They work well, they are necessary, and they are now insanely priced for what they are.

Nice product

These discs do a great job. In fact they work as well as cabbing wheels. They are quite pricey, though. They do not come with the backing plate and recommend sponge backing. There should be an option to purchase all of these together. I did not understand that I needed all of these until I got my machine. I had to place a second (expensive) order and wait to be able to use my machine. Hi-Tech Diamond needs to be more clear about this.
