Slant Cabber (rock/mineral model)
Our American-made Slant Cabber lap machine is a uniquely-angled, flat lap machine. Grind, smooth and polish rocks and minerals to make free-form shapes and cabochons for necklaces, earrings, rings and other jewelry pieces. Create flats for larger pieces or on the backs of cabochons. It’s also well-suited for polishing a large variety of natural and synthetic gem material, enamels and metals. The unique, angled design provides improved visibility and allows you to sit while you work instead of standing. The Slant Cabber is available in both 6″ and 8″ models and comes with an accessory kit specially designed for grinding, smoothing and polishing rocks and minerals. (If you plan on polishing glass and/or crystal, we suggest purchasing the Slant Cabber glass/crystal model.)
The Hi-Tech Diamond Slant Cabber lap machine is manufactured with a 1/2" arbor and powered by a 1/4 hp, heavy-duty, ball bearing, DC motor. This motor is variable speed so you can work at whatever pace you desire, delivering speeds from 800 rpm to 3,400 rpm. This portable machine can be used anywhere. Whether you’re at home, in the shop or on the road, this quiet machine won’t disturb others around you. It’s lightweight, rustproof and impact-resistant, making it even easier to travel with.
The water reservoir, which holds about a quart of water, prevents heat buildup while you work and removes dust particles so you don’t inhale any harsh chemicals. Our innovative, durable water tube has a water control valve so you can control the water flow while you work. The black splash guard keeps water off you so you don’t get soaked while you work. Cleanup is as simple as it gets: Just flush the bottom water reservoir with clean water and you're ready to work again.
Make sure you choose the right power supply for your machine. The 220 volt models are available only for overseas customers that require 220V - 240V power supply. All 220 volt models are manufactured with this CE rated, Type F plug (see below):

Pros : good motor, quality laps, easy to use and clean
Cons : expensive, small water reservoir
Hi David - Thank you for your valued feedback. We do have an add-on option to increase the water reservoir capacity on the Slant Cabber machine. Here is a link to our Pro-Flow water cooling system: https://hitechdiamond.com/collections/lap-machines/products/pro-flow-water-cooling-system-for-slant-cabber. We have two options available; the pressure tank and water pump. We hope this information helps and is of value to you!
First off, it isn’t a bad machine even though it is all plastic. It seems durable enough. Water is an issue. Every picture I’ve seen including the ones on hitechdiamond and the instruction manual show the water spout being on the upper left corner where the unit I received has it in the middle (still left side). It is a nightmare to get the water flowing unless it’s supposed to be hitting the bottom half of the discs which just makes the water spin off into the dumping area. I finally found a spot AND perfect angle of the spout to get water just above the center screw. I have to be careful not to move it when changing discs or it takes a very long time to find the perfect combination once again to get the water to flow. Just a bad design altogether and not what was advertised according to all pictures I saw. Also, the 180 grit diamond disc doesn’t seem to hold up very long when used on hard stone. I’ve had it less than 2 weeks and used it on one half of a geode and about small 3 rocks found in a creek. The disc feels almost smooth already. Be prepared to purchase not only a new 180 grit early on, but the unit only comes with that one sanding grit while the others are classified as polishers. You must have other grits for sanding before starting to polish or the scratches from the sander won’t come out no matter how long you try to polish.
On the plus side, it is very quiet and has minimal vibration so can be used inside easily. Cleaning is not hard either.
There are pros and cons to the machine but overall it’s not bad although a bit pricey considering the design flaws and what is still needed to buy to fully complete a stone. If you are aware of these things and can overlook them then you will be satisfied with your purchase. If not, there are plenty of DIY options online until changes are made to this one.
Hi Pati - Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the Hi-Tech Diamond Slant Cabber it is very much appreciated. The pictures you referenced show the modular water tubing installed slightly higher on older Slant Cabber models. These units had a higher number of water flow issues reported before we assessed, tested and lowered the installation location on the housing. The lower position allows for a better downward flow from the well. While we do occasionally have reports of water flow issues, they are typically resolved quickly with the following tips. 1) make sure the valve arrow is turned and pointing at the nozzle to fully open the water valve. 2) move the tubing to a 6 o'clock position straight down 3) when flow begins, move the tubing to a 4 o'clock position, seated right below the lap knob 4) adjust flow as needed by slowly and incrementally turning the arrow away from the nozzle end.
The 180# lap is a great starting point for most users to grind and shape their pieces, however for harder materials or material that needs to be ground down significantly, adding an 80# lap can help speed up the process and extend the life of your 180# lap. Additional tips for extending the life of your lap: apply a medium pressure and use plenty of water, let the lap do the work. Heavy pressure will not make the process go more quickly, but can make the lap wear out more quickly and put more wear and tear on your machine. The smoothing discs refine the work done on the 180# and begin pre-polishing. We have a great explanation of the differences between the electroplated discs/laps and smoothing discs in our FAQ which you may find informative as well.
